The theme of this week is news photo and I choose the news, Manila Hostage Incident as my analysis. Why do I choose this news? The reason is simple. This news creates a great sensation to Hongkongers.
Manila Hostage Incident happened on 23th August in 2010. A former Philippine National Police officer named Rolando Mendoza hijacked a tourist bus of Hongkongers in Rizal Park in Manila. Mendoza claimed that he had been unfairly dismissed from his job and demanded a fair hearing for himself in order to regain his job.
For this incident, I found two different pictures which show a big contrast on the same news from the websites of Orientdaily and Sinanews. The day after the incident, a shocking photo went viral online. This photo shows that Manila policemen took photos with smiling faces in front of the bus. Another one captured the heartbreaking moment of victim’s family members. Let’s take a look on these pictures and see why there is such a big contrast.
First, for the first photo, it captured the depressing face of victim’s family members. I think that this picture is quite objective and simply shows you the truth. The victim’s family was heartbreaking and cried heavily after the incident as they lost their dearest son. I believe that everyone would show sympathy for the victims and their families after seeing this photo.
For the second photo, it shows some policemen took photos with smiling faces in front of the bus. At the first sight, people may think that the policemen are cold-blooded and ruthless as they did such a disrespectful action. It seems that they were having fun and treated the accident as a trivial thing. However, it may be too subjective to look at this picture. We may think deeper on it and do some guessing.
There are two sided for every question. Looking at the bad side of the picture, people may have the same thinking with mine and believe that the Manila policemen are ruthless. But when we look at the good side, we may have some other conclusions for this picture. The policemen might be delighted because the hostage was over and the murder was killed. Therefore, they wanted to commemorate that moment and the photo was taken for this reason. If we look at the good side of it, the contrast of the two pictures will be reduced. The difference between them would only be the positive and negative attitude of people towards the accident. A photo gives you two very different views. Which side would you look at? It depends on you.
Although I do not believe that the action of Manila policemen was made for a positive purpose, I notice that we may have different views on the same pictures.
