Do You Really Need It? Keep What You Have.
The Red Collar Theif
Santa Claus, Father of Christmas, who is nice and generous, greets people with joy and hopes.
Some may insist his existence and some may not. But no matter how you slice it, you would never
picture him commit the crime that shown in the cartoon.
Obviously, taking away other's wallets without their acknowledgement is illegal, we named it as
theft. Here is the problems, is Stanta Claus a thief who steals our property for years?
At first sight I interpreted Santa as a thief, but a closer look would found out Santa was actually
a puppet. The fact that Santa not committing the crime comforts me, otherwise he will breaks
many hearts. This picture exposes the consumerism problem nowadays.
Santa represents Christmas, and I do believe author not only targets on Christmas, but all the
festivals on this globe. Wallet's owner symbolizes the general public, or consumer(s). Especially
those crazies during the festival big sales. Stealer actually signifies entrepreneur(s) that they take
advantages of festivals to make money.
Santa is the solely coloured subject in the cartoon, the shiny red figure catches viewers' eye as
if Santa is stealing. Author's intention is to reveal an elaborate hoax, that someone mislead the
general public into blaming the innocent subjects, such as festival itself. In fact, the public do
not realize they are the victims, that is why the left one is facing behind the thief.
David Fincher had once said "Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate
so we can buy shit we don't need." Advertisement acts as a hint triggering public to consume.
For example, McDonalds from all around the world share a same restaurant setting and the red-yellow of its logo that would increase viewer's appetite. Sometimes, we or consumers do not
recognize these tricky traps and even appreciate it. This cartoon reminds me festival itself should
be the one being celebrated, not the products sold by companies. Also, we should treasure what
we owned because all these are not come easily. Buy what you really need, think logically and
do not influence by others.
