This time, I am going to introduce two special traditions of women in the past. They are foot binding and lengthening necks. Women believe that the two traditions above would beautify themselves and enhance their lure.
Foot binding in China – The Lotus Feet
Why people would call them “Lotus feet”? The answer is obvious and simple. The feet are bound as small as a lotus and their length is about three inches. Therefore, these three inches small feet are called as ‘Lotus feet’.
In the past, women believed that small feet could make them more attractive and lure the men. Women in China would bind their feet when they were little girls in order to marry their Mr. Right. Therefore, foot binding became a traditional custom of Chinese women.
These photos are searched from the website of the Television Broadcasting (TVB). They are taken in a small village in Yun Nan, China in 2008.
The tradition, lengthening necks is originated from the indigenous people in Thailand kayan tribes. Women there are well known for wearing neck rings in order to lengthen their necks. They believe that women are beautiful and attractive if they have long necks. The women who wear neck rings are known as "giraffe women".
The photos below are all searched from the internet and blogs. Links are posted at the end of the essay.
